In honor of Mother’s Day, I thought it might be fun to give a shout to some of my favorite sports mom’s. These are the women who you have very seldom seen away from their sons or daughters side—they share the glory and the spotlight. Some even have made a lucrative living as sponsors.
So, without further ado, Happy Mother’s Day to:
1. Wilma “Mama” McNabb
For a time, we saw more of Mama McNabb than we did of Donovan. Her constant companionship, to her Pro Football playing son, endeared her not only to Donovan but to millions of fans around the country. Her appeal became so great, in fact, that we started seeing her hawking Campbell’s Chunky Soup for a living. An effort that she championed as president of the Professional Football Players Moms Association (you have her to thank for seeing football players with their moms in those soup commercials). These days she’s a little bit more in the background but still recognized by fans—even without Donovan on her arm. You go, mama!
2. Oracene Price
It can’t be easy being the mom of two phenomenal athletes who often compete….against each other, but Oracene is the stout picture of cool and is often seen cheering courtside for her girls no matter what—even when that means she will likely have to see one of them on the losing end of another sisterly battle. It’s a trait that both girls appreciate.
3. Deborah Phelps
Deborah has seen, and supported, her son through both his high and low points. When asked about her son’s infamous pipe-smoking incident, she said she was disappointed but not angry. She went on to say that no one is perfect and we all make mistakes at some point in our lives. The important thing is to grow and learn from our mishaps—not dwell and punish. You tell em’, Deborah.
4. Kutilda Woods
What a year it has been so far for Kutilda and her famous golfer son, Tiger Woods. After the allegations of numerous affairs, the public humiliation, the loss of sponsorship deals, and the potential breaking up of what many thought was a happy home, Kutilda is taking stock once again. Kutilda herself was a victim of a philandering husband in Tiger’s father, Earl, and was both “angry” and “disappointed” in her son’s behavior. However, she is going to stand by him no matter what because that’s what mothers do—good for you.
5. Pam Tebow
Not only is Pam Tebow responsible for Tim Tebow but now, thanks in large part to his success, she has become a celebrity of sorts among the pro-life crowd. She is now often asked to speak at pro-life rallies and engagements in order to further relay her story of love. I suspect we’ll be seeing and hearing a lot more from her in the near future.
