Sony Michel, Nick Chubb, Brian Herrien, and Elijah Holyfield.
That’s four guys in the running back fray. All of whom are capable of making a difference, on the field, given the time and opportunity.
However, with so many available options, and more on the way this summer, how do you get all that skill involved?
Well, Jim Chaney, you’re up …and Kirby Smart has some helpful advice on how you can do just that: think outside the box.
“It would be a crying shame for us to not find ways of using them outside of just handing them the ball.
…”There are other ways to get the ball besides carrying. They [Herrien and Holyfield] have both embraced that role – whether it is punt return or kickoff return – and slot for Brian. Holyfield has picked up more carries because Sony and Brian have moved around everywhere – they are athletic figures who can play different spots.” (Kipp Adams, Dawgs247)
If ever a coach were sending a blueprint, Smart appears to be offering up one for Chaney with those comments. I find it especially interesting that he’s mentioned Herrien as an option in the slot.
One thing is clear, Smart is open to having multiple options available on offense and, as of right now, the running back spot offers plenty of depth and versatility.
